What it means to step up services as a broker
There is a saying that goes: “It is prosperity that gives us friends, adversity that proves them.” Nothing could be more apt in describing the situation of insurance brokers, who had to prove themselves to the clients they serve in the face of the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic.
For Cowan Insurance Group, the pandemic gave an opportunity for its clients to better appreciate the role of a broker in providing advice and guidance. The company has been recognized as one of Insurance Business Canada’s 5-Star Brokerages – Ontario 2022, with its dedication to service being recognized as a highlight.

“I feel really proud of how our team stepped up to give that level of advice and guidance to help our clients manage though,” said Janet Peddigrew, president of Cowan Insurance Group. “I think the appreciation for the role of a broker was even more emphasized through that environment.”
Last year, Cowan Insurance Group joined the technology-focused risk management consortium TechAssure. By being a member, Cowan can collaborate with other members and trade best practices in risk management and can tap into the group’s resources and capabilities to better serve the innovation sectors. It also allows Cowan’s clients to access resources such as benchmarking, analytics, and risk management tools to help mitigate risk and make more informed decisions.

Cowan’s inclusion into the TechAssure consortium is notable in that not only was it formed in the middle of the pandemic but it was made in consideration of Cowan’s client base in Toronto – “one of the most important technology hubs in North America,” according to TechAssure executive director Garrett Droege.
“We are a 95-year-old family, independently owned Canadian business, which is pretty remarkable,” Peddigrew told Insurance Business. “And the culture of our team is focused on service delivery, caring about our client, and giving back to the community. I think that resonated through [the pandemic].”
