Introduction to Vitality

Vitality is one of the leading providers of private medical insurance in the UK; their flagship product Personal Healthcare has a five-star Defacto rating. Alongside this, they have amassed an enviable number of positive customer reviews, which, at the time of writing, stands at nearly 23,000. OK, not all of those are for their health insurance offering, but still, it demonstrates the high service levels they provide.

We’ve written a comprehensive review of Vitality health insurance which we’d suggest you read if you’re keen to understand what makes them a top provider.

What affects the cost of a Vitality health insurance policy?

Many factors will affect the cost of your policy, be that with Vitality or another leading provider. Some factors you’ll have control over, such as the level of cover you opt for, whereas others you won’t, such as your age! Here are just some of the things that will affect the cost of your policy:

Where you live – London hospitals charge higher treatment fees, so if you live in town, your health insurance will likely cost more too.Your age – it’s no secret that we become more susceptible to illness as we age; thus, the older you are, the more you will pay for health insurance.Level of Cover – Like all of the best health insurers, Vitality will let you configure your policy to suit your requirements and budget. Excess – the amount you offer to contribute each time you claim will affect your monthly premiums. Consultants – with all top policies, you can choose to let the insurer select who will treat you or have the freedom to choose yourself. The latter, as you might expect, costs more.No claims discount – if you already have health insurance and haven’t made a claim in recent times, then you’ll receive a no-claims discount, reducing the cost of your Vitality policy.Therapies – chiropractic treatment, osteopathy, chiropody/podiatry, acupuncture, homoeopathy and dietitian consultations are all therapies that won’t be included as standard. You can opt to include Therapies Cover, which will provide you with access to the above, but of course, you will pay more for your policy.Mental health cover – while your policy will include a certain amount of mental health support, you also have the option to extend it.Optical, Dental and Hearing Cover – this optional extra helps you cover the costs of routine check-ups and preventative care. As an optional extra, it will cost you more to include it.Dental Cover – you can choose between two levels of this optional additional Cover; Major Dental Treatments, which covers some of the most significant dental work, or Major and Routing Dental Treatments, which goes further and will protect you for more.Your hospital list –  Vitality offers three hospital lists to choose from; Local, Country-wide, and London Care. The cost of your premiums will depend on which you choose. The cost of treatments – Vitality relies on a network of private hospitals, clinics and consultants to deliver care to its members, all of which are subject to their running costs. Over time, the price of treatments do tend to rise, and with that general shift comes higher policy premiums.

As we said at the start of this section, you will have control over some of the above, whereas, with others, you won’t. As we always say, you need to speak to an independent health insurance broker about your requirements so that you can configure the right policy for you. It’s often the case that one provider, such as Vitality, is great for certain circumstances but not as good in others. It’s only by working closely with a broker that you can ensure that you find the best deal and, importantly, get the level of Cover that you want from your policy.

Really pleased with how quick and easy comparing policies was.

Vitality health insurance price guide

Now we get to arguably the most critical part of this post, the example pricing. As we’ve already said, there are so many factors that impact the cost of a policy; whatever is listed here will be different to what you pay. Indeed, Vitality may not even be the best private medical insurer for you.

Policy configuration

For this article, we have based the quotes we have obtained on several fixed criteria. The only thing that has changed in the quotes that we received is the age of the adults on the policy and the number of people. For the most part, we didn’t adjust the default options you are presented with by Vitality. Here is how we based our pricing experiment:

All prices were obtained on 1st January 2022We used the Vitality website to get the pricingWe used a St Albans, Hertfordshire postcode (AL1 1HY)We set the policy excess to £250 per plan yearOutpatient Cover was set to £500The policies were to be underwritten on a moratorium basis (default)We opted for Consultant Select for the hospital list and consultant optionAny children on the policy were ten years oldWhere more than one adult was on the policy, they were the same age, exactly

Frequently asked questions

How much does Vitality health insurance cost?

The cost of Vitality health insurance will vary based on your requirements, and you should always speak to an independent broker before taking out a policy.

In this post, we found that the median average cost for adults between 20 and 70 was £61.55 per month. This is purely meant as an example; the price you pay will be different.

How can I reduce the cost of my Vitality health insurance?

There are many ways you can reduce the cost of your Vitality policy, such as; increase your excess, change your hospital list, reduce your outpatient Cover; remove any additional extras you may have added.

Probably the best way to reduce the cost of your health insurance, be that with Vitality or another insurer, is to work with an independent broker and compare the market thoroughly to find the best deal for you.

Will my Vitality policy cost more at renewal?

Most health insurance policies will increase in cost each year, mainly due to you getting older and potentially due to any claims made. There are occasions where the price won’t rise due to a special promotion from the insurer, but this isn’t the norm. For this reason, we recommend that everyone should review their policy each year. Our health insurance renewal service takes the hassle away from finding the best deal for you as our brokers do all the leg work and report back to you with their findings. This ensures that you’re always paying a fair price and aren’t being taken for a ride by any given insurer.

Is it cheaper to buy a Vitality policy direct?

No, the price of health insurance is typically the same whether you buy it directly from a provider or through a broker. The added benefit you get with a broker is that they are independent of the insurer, and they’ll not only help you configure your policy, but they’ll find you the best deal too.

How can I get a quote for a Vitality policy?

Please click here to request a quote, and one of our FCA authorised advisers will perform a market review on your behalf and provide you with customised pricing.
