A mid-cycle refresh to the X3 M40i includes a new headlight and taillight design and revisions to the front and rear fascias, with the former including larger kidney grilles.
Under the hood, BMW’s B58 turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six generates 382 horsepower, 27 more than the engine used before the 2020 model year.
ZF’s fantastic eight-speed automatic routes torque to a standard all-wheel-drive system.
During our testing, the M40i shot to 60 mph in 4.1 seconds and crossed the quarter-mile line in 12.8 seconds at 107 mph.
The M40i comes standard with M Sport brakes measuring 13.7 inches up front and 13.6 inches in the rear. Stops from 70 mph happen in a tidy 158 feet.
The optional 20-inch wheels wrapped in Bridgestone Alenza 001 RFT summer rubber cling to the skidpad at 0.88 g.
The rear fascia and taillights are also new, the latter having a 3D effect when illuminated.
The new engine adds a 48-volt hybrid system that delivers silky-smooth auto stop/start operation.
Pricing for the 2022 X3 M40i starts at $58,795.
The interior has been mildly reworked and now features a 12.3-inch instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment display.
