VA Disability Compensation Rates and Table for 2022

VA Disability Compensation Rates and Table for 2022

Veterans with service-connected disabilities can receive benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). The amount a veteran receives in compensation will depend on his or her assigned disability rating. It also will depend on the VA’s compensation rates. The compensation rates can change each year if Congress grants a Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA).

Below, we discuss changes to the 2022 VA disability compensation rates. You will also find updated compensation information in our VA compensation table.

VA Disability Compensation Rates for 2022

Overview: VA Disability Benefits

After you file your initial VA disability claim, the VA will review your claim and assign it a rating. Your disability rating should reflect the severity of the disability. Generally, the more serious a condition or the more a condition prevents you from working, the higher your rating will be. Additionally, the rating tells you the amount of monthly VA disability compensation you will be paid. The ratings listed in our VA compensation table reflect the amount paid for a veteran’s combines rating.

How the VA Combines Disability Ratings

If you have multiple service-connected disabilities, the VA will combine them into one rating. This means that each month you can expect to receive one check for your VA disability compensation rather than several individual checks. Learn more about how the VA combines ratings here.

Disability ratings are assigned on a scale that ranges from 0% to 100%. To qualify for disability compensation, a veteran’s rating must fall between 10% and 100%. A zero percent rating is a decision by VA that a condition is service-connected, but the severity of the condition is non-compensable (not severe enough yet for compensation to be paid for that condition).

Changes to the VA Disability Compensation Rates for 2022

Starting December 1st of 2021, veterans saw changes in their VA disability rates which will last through 2022. These changes were the result of the Cost of Living Adjustment, or COLA. The COLA takes into account the fluctuation of cost-of-living expenses that veterans face. In 2022, the COLA rates have increased by 5.9%. This means that veterans’ monthly compensation has also increased by 5.9%.

2022 Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA)

This is the largest increase in 40 years! Soaring inflation, a resurgent economy and other factors contributed to the sizable COLA increase, according to the Social Security Administration. Annually, the VA makes cost-of-living adjustments (COLAs) to VA disability benefits to ensure inflation does not erode VA benefits’ purchasing power.

How to Read the VA Compensation Table

The amount of monthly compensation a veteran will receive depends on his or her disability rating. Veterans with a combined rating higher than 30% and who have qualifying dependents are eligible for additional compensation. These qualifying dependents include:

A spouse
Children under the age of 18
Children between the ages of 18-23 who are still in school
Dependent parents

Veterans with multiple qualifying dependents can expect to see additional compensation for each additional dependent.
