The main differences between motorbike insurance and car insurance

It’s easy enough to think that motorbike insurance works in pretty much the same way that car insurance does. In principle, there are some similarities.

You pay a monthly fee, more commonly referred to as a premium, in exchange for cover. If there’s an incident that you can claim for under your policy, we’ll pay for the repairs or replacement. Oh, and the claims process is essentially the same, with our claims teams taking excellent care of you every step of the way.

There are, however, some key distinctions to be aware of, which we can highlight for you right here.

Here are the main differences between motorbike insurance and car insurance.

Choice is limited

When it comes to car insurance, you tend to get a choice between the more expensive comprehensive cover, the more affordable third party, fire and theft cover, and the cheapest and most basic level of cover… Third party only.

When it comes to motorbike insurance, on the other hand, there’s usually only 1 level of cover available on the market and that’s comprehensive motorbike insurance.

We’ve done things a bit differently here. We offer comprehensive, third party and theft, third party only, and theft only motorbike insurance. Hey, some cover is better than none at all, so theft only is worth considering if you’re strapped for cash.

Racing on the track

While it can be tough to speak on behalf of all insurance companies in South Africa, we can say that generally, this policy doesn’t cover you for any form of racing. We definitely don’t, so if you want to get that ‘Fast and the Furious’ feeling, you’re going to have to enjoy the paid-for privileges of go-karting.

However… The king’s motorbike insurance does cover you for track days, so long as we’ve approved them upfront.

Motorbike insurance is more expensive

There’s no doubt that bikers are more vulnerable than other motorists. Even a minor bump can result in some nasty injuries and damage to your bike. To accommodate the vastly higher level of risk associated with motorbikes, these premiums are likely to be more expensive than car insurance.

This can come as a bit of shock, because most motorbikes cost way less than cars so you’d think that the premiums would always be cheaper.

The extras aren’t always the same

Look, there’s the odd crossover when it comes to the kinds of extras that you can add to your car insurance and your motorbike insurance. For instance, lots of insurers will let you add scratch and dent insurance to both.

But there are also some extras that are more specific to motorbikes only.

The main example in our royal bag of products and benefits is cover for your motorbike gear. When you take out our comprehensive motorbike insurance, you can add cover for your motorbike gear for just R1 a month.

No really, it’s R1 plain and simple.

How to get simple cheap motorbike insurance

There’s 1 big thing that’s the same as for car insurance as it is for motorbike insurance and that’s when you come to King Price, you can get simple cheap cover that has your back.

Our motorbike insurance even includes cover for medical expenses related to an accident involving your insured motorbike. That’s how much we care.
