Family-owned brokerage Sutherland Insurance has named Zachary Sutherland (pictured) its new president.

Zachary Sutherland represents the fifth generation of the family business. He joined the firm as a commercial insurance broker in 2001 and became its vice president in 2017.

Sutherland Insurance started in 1870, when John Sutherland began his insurance career with Gore Fire Insurance of Galt. He later worked with his sons John, James and Robert to incorporate the Company of John Sutherland and Sons in 1912.

Sutherland Insurance deals with clients in Guelph, as well as surrounding areas in and out of Ontario. It has a wide range of offerings including automobile, property, life and business insurance.

In a Linkedin post, Zachary shared he was “over the moon” over his promotion and stressed the firm’s commitment to its family roots.

“In any family business, the keyword is family. It’s how we have always tried to treat our customers and our staff,” he said.

“I have had the privilege of seeing those examples countless times through the many amazing mentors and leaders who have help our business grow to where it is today … We have come a long way in 153 years and I am excited for where the team can take us next.”

Zachary also congratulated Steve Kurtz for his promotion to the role of vice president. Kurtz has been with Sutherland Insurance since 2019.

Prior to being named vice president, he was the product team lead at the firm. He joined Sutherland after spending time as business development consultant at EGB Insurance, an MGA backed by Lloyd’s.

Kutz has also worked at Steele and Ferraro Insurance Brokers, in addition to holding underwriting roles with Aviva and Gore Mutual Insurance.
