Suncorp Group (Suncorp) has reaffirmed its commitment to reaching net zero by planning to roll out electric vehicles (EVs) within its corporate fleet.
In a statement, Suncorp said that transitioning to EVs is vital to decarbonising its business operations.
“We’ve been intensely focused over the past few years, not only on our fleet but also on driving down our energy consumption and sourcing renewable energy for our offices,” said Colin Harris, EGM real estate, procurement & operations at Suncorp.
Allocating electric vehicles
Suncorp is allocating its first set of small EVs, with charging infrastructure already in the Sydney and Brisbane offices.
Craig Kelly, senior mobile lending manager at Suncorp, is the first driver to try Suncorp’s chosen EV, a Hyundai Kona.
“I feel very lucky to be given the opportunity to drive an EV; it’s a smooth and quiet ride, and it’s fantastic to see Suncorp working towards sustainability,” he said.
Suncorp’s net-zero commitment
In the last three years, Suncorp has reduced its office space by 20%. Now, 76% of all the electricity the group uses comes from renewable sources.
Harris said: “We made the decision to pursue electrification of the fleet back in 2021, despite the unknowns and the supply challenges we could foresee. In Australia, there are still only limited EVs available on the market, so our planning had to start long ago.”
Over the coming months and years, Suncorp will add more EVs to a mix of functions throughout the group. It will also continue increasing its renewable energy use and delivering on its plans to reach net zero by 2050 across all emission categories. Additionally, the insurer has committed to reaching 100% renewable energy by 2025, having already reduced its Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 79%.
