As more young travelers embark on international trips, many are finding themselves facing unexpected health issues, leading to a surge in travel insurance claims for those under 30, according to Southern Cross Travel Insurance (SCTI).

Between July 2023 and June 2024, the average cost of claims for common issues among younger travelers has been significant. Medical claims for gastroenteritis have averaged $846, while injuries from trips and falls have led to claims of around $1,500. Other medical-related cancellations and accidents resulted in claims ranging from $795 to $1,100.

“We’ve seen a rise in claims relating to young customers, from severe vomiting to broken arms, ankles, and wrists. But we’re reassured by young SCTI customers deciding to pack a travel insurance policy. This smart decision has enabled us to help them get back on track,” SCTI chief customer officer Jess Strange said.

Such injuries have often disrupted travelers’ plans as well.

“Young travelers tend to have active itineraries, which they can’t complete once they’re injured,” Strange said, pointing out that healthcare standards vary across countries, which only adds another layer of difficulty for those seeking treatment far from home.

In more serious cases, SCTI’s Emergency Assistance team has had to intervene by organizing air ambulance evacuations or arranging for family members to travel and support their loved ones. Some families, particularly those traveling with children, have experienced severe cases of stomach illness or chickenpox, resulting in hospitalization and delayed returns.

As the holiday travel season approaches, Strange emphasized the need to plan ahead.

“It’s a reminder that travel insurance is a must-pack item, regardless of age… Don’t leave it to the last minute to book your insurance for your Christmas holiday travels.”
