Finally, IB named those rated 80% or greater 5-Star Underwriters for 2022.

The list features Mark Morilla, a senior portfolio underwriter for commercial at Unica Insurance (Unica) since March 2019, who stood among the nominees by being best known for focusing on solutions.

According to his colleague, Morilla exemplifies Unica’s hands-on, personalised approach to serving brokers despite the limitations imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Mark was recently tasked to fill in for a colleague not knowing the complexities of an account and was provided with a short timeline to find a solution to retain it,” said Monica Celisano, regional vice president of commercial at Unica. “By quickly establishing contact with our broker partner through a video call, Mark was able to address their needs from start to finish and retain this high margin account with terms that were agreeable to all involved.”

Another underwriter that stood out among the nominees was Melissa Woods, a commercial lines underwriter for The Portage Mutual Insurance. Since entering insurance in 2006 to handle basic auto insurance, she was often curious about other careers in the industry, such as underwriting and claims.

Reflecting on her insurance journey, Woods said she would not be an underwriter today without the support of her commercial underwriting team and other department colleagues.
