As Paris gears up for the 2024 Olympic Games, an influx of tourists, including Australians, is anticipated.

Recent data from travel insurer PassportCard highlights the French capital as a notably expensive and incident-prone destination for Australian travellers. Issues such as medical emergencies, delays, and theft are prevalent.

Paris deemed costliest city in Europe for medical incidents

The When It Happens in Europe report has revealed that 53% of Australians consider Paris the costliest city in Europe for medical incidents, surpassing London (41%) and the Swiss Alps (35%).

Paris was also noted for being a common location for lost luggage and theft, with 41% of respondents reporting such issues. Additionally, 21% of Australian tourists have experienced flight cancellations in the city.

Travel risks in Europe

PassportCard CEO Peter Klemt discussed the risks associated with traveling to Europe, especially during the northern hemisphere’s summer. He emphasised the importance of securing adequate travel insurance, given the potential challenges.

“European adventures are full of unforgettable experiences, but they’re not always smooth sailing. Our data revealed two in five (42%) Australians who have travelled to Europe have had to make an insurance claim during a past trip, with one in 10 making multiple claims. This highlights just how common travel mishaps are across the continent,” he said.

He also highlighted the importance of being prepared for disruptions in France, a country known for its cultural attractions but also for strikes and protests that can disrupt plans. The upcoming Olympics may add to these risks, making travel insurance crucial.

Additionally, Klemt pointed out that medical claims from Australians in Europe typically average under A$1,000, though costs can escalate in severe cases.

The report detailed the most common insurance claims made by Australians in Europe, which include:
