nib has supported the Yes vote for constitutional change to enable First Nations peoples to make representations to the Parliament on matters related to them.

In a recent statement, nib leaders Mark Fitzgibbon (chief executive officer and managing director), David Gordon (chairman), and Roslyn Toms (group executive legal and chief risk officer, nib Group RAP champion, head of sustainability and community) said nib supports the Uluru Statement from the Heart.

“It is a fact that First Nations peoples’ experience, on average, is eight years less in life expectancy. Self-determination is key to enabling First Nations peoples to take control of the social and economic factors that impact their health and lives and achieve equitable access to healthcare. That’s why we’re working with First Nations peoples to create meaningful opportunities through employment, increased supplier diversity, and strong community partnerships,” the nib leaders said.

Uluru Statement from the Heart

The Uluru Statement from the Heart calls for substantive reform to help acknowledge Indigenous rights by establishing an Indigenous Voice to parliament and a Makarrata Commission.

In 2022, nib expressed its support for the statement. This year, as Australia approaches the referendum, the insurer reiterated its support, emphasising the changes will deliver positive outcomes for the country.

“The referendum on the Voice is a decision for the Australian people. We recognise and respect diverse views and experiences, including those of our employees, members, shareholders, and others associated with our company,” the nib leaders said.

“As we continue to deliver on our reconciliation commitments, we will strive to reflect the intent of the Uluru Statement from the Heart. The road to the Uluru Statement from the Heart has been long, and there is still a long way to go. We will continue to advocate alongside First Nations stakeholders. We encourage our communities, partners, suppliers, members, and travellers to join us in support.”
