Multiple services delivered under one combined policy for a community-based initiative

Authored by Q Underwriting

Situation

Our broker presented us with a case for a village shop that had diversified into a café and meeting place. Having originally formed as a ‘Registered Society’ ten years earlier, their client’s business now hosted a range of community-led activities.

Community-based initiatives providing food and indoor meeting places have become increasingly common in recent years. This is often due to areas becoming affected by food and fuel poverty issues, and traditional businesses no longer being able to compete alongside online retailers and supermarkets.

Issue and Exposure

As the community shop became more established, the range of activities they intended to host broadened. They were selling locally produced deli goods, hot food, alcohol, and hosted community events with outdoor seating. They also hired third parties to run games nights and provided a meeting place for book clubs.

Many volunteers were involved in the daily running’s of the shop, so it is unsurprising our broker strived for complete confidence that all their client’s insurance needs were met.

Standard insurance packages within the retail sector were unable to cater for all the business’s needs, nor be as competitively priced as Q.

Solution

We provided Employer’s Liability cover for almost 100 registered volunteers and cover for stock – including frozen food and alcohol. We also tailored our Business Interruption cover and provided insurance for their building – which in this case happened to be a re-purposed church.

Here at Q, our underwriting team are trained to comprehend the wide range of cover requirements that may be necessary for our brokers’ clients. Thanks to our expert underwriters and the versatility of our Charity Combined offering, we managed to deliver multiple services under one competitively priced policy.
