Lloyd’s global re/insurer MS Amlin has announced Sam Phibbs (pictured) as its new head of catastrophe research.

Phibbs brings a strong academic background to his new position, holding a PhD in atmospheric physics from Imperial College London. His role will involve the incorporation of the latest scientific advancements into catastrophe models, leading research on catastrophe risks, and enhancing partnerships with academic institutions and third-party vendors.

The role also includes involvement with the Lighthill Risk Network, an organization established to bridge the gap between academic research and the insurance industry.

Before joining MS Amlin, Phibbs served as vice president of International Catastrophe Advisory at Guy Carpenter for two years, where he spearheaded the company’s advisory on the physical risks associated with climate change.

His career also includes a five-year tenure at Gallagher Re, where, as divisional director for model research and evaluation, he focused on developing and refining models for extreme weather catastrophes.

In his new role, Phibbs will report to Jessica Turner, head of risk analytics, and will be responsible for managing the company’s catastrophe modeling across a broad spectrum of perils including hurricanes, floods, wildfires, and terrorism.

“This is an important appointment for our business, as we manage increasingly complex challenges from climate change,” Turner said. “By adopting the latest advances in science and catastrophe modeling, we aim to stay at the forefront of risk pricing and risk selection in the Lloyd’s market. Sam’s expertise spanning industry and academia will help us to deliver cutting-edge risk insights to our underwriters and clients, and I’m delighted to welcome him to the team.”
