Mosaic Insurance has bolstered its team of underwriting specialists to offer capacity across different business lines to brokers and clients in Canada.

Since opening its Toronto office last July, the global specialty insurer has expanded its Canadian presence from coast to coast, focusing on five lines of business—cyber, transactional liability, financial institutions, professional liability, and environmental liability.

Head of Canada Ian Fraser (pictured above, fifth from left) expressed his pride for the “strong underwriting talent” bolstering the firm’s move into all major Canadian geographies.

“It’s a lot to have accomplished in a relatively short period of time,” said Fraser, who has over 20 years of experience in specialty insurance and underwrites in cyber, financial institutions, and professional liability. “Our focus remains on creating innovative solutions for clients.”

Ricardo Philip (first from left), VP and underwriter for environmental liability, brings an extensive background of over 25 years in environmental insurance.

His career includes loss control, underwriting, and portfolio management roles at AIG, ACE INA Insurance (now Chubb), and Markel Canada. Philip founded his environmental-risk consulting company in 2018 and recently worked for an Ontario environmental contractor, focusing on estimation, tender negotiation, and project management.

Kyle Gray (second from left), VP and underwriter for cyber, has 14 years of underwriting experience in specialty insurance. Before joining Mosaic, he led a start-up cyber MGA and managed profitable cyber, errors & omissions, and directors & officers portfolios at CNA Canada and Trisura.

Reynaldo Batac (third from left), VP and underwriter for professional liability, cyber & financial institutions, has over 16 years of industry experience in claims adjusting, risk engineering, insurance placement, and underwriting. His previous role saw him lead and develop the financial, professional, technology, and cyber divisions at Sovereign Insurance.

Charlie Zilvytis (fourth from left), VP and underwriter for transactional liability, specializes in complex Canadian and international M&A transaction risks. He previously worked as a corporate associate at Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP, representing clients in various corporate matters, including M&A and private equity transactions. He holds a Juris Doctor from Osgoode Hall Law School at York University and a Master of Business Administration from the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto.

Mosaic follows a hybrid global model, which combines capacity from its own Lloyd’s syndicate, 1609, with capital from a consortium of carrier partners seeking regional access and underwriting expertise in non-commoditized specialty lines.

“Our syndicated capital program is an integral part of the differentiating value we offer the Canadian market,” said Fraser. “It allows us to distribute syndicated capacity directly, providing diversification to clients. It’s what they want, and it’s unique in Canada.”

Mosaic’s continued global expansion includes the launch of primary cyber coverage in May, which featured a collaboration with Palo Alto-based digital risk-quantification firm SAFE Security. A month later, the firm grew its portfolio further by establishing its environmental liability unit in Canada, offering energy clients multi-line coverage across other specialties, including cyber and professional liability.
