Meet Erika Melander, Director of Manufacturing
Erika Melander joined Central as Director of Manufacturing in 2022. With over 17 years of industry expertise, she’s steadily grown Central’s manufacturing vertical over the past two years. Read on to learn about Erika’s background and why she’s passionate about protecting manufacturers.
Making the Move to Manufacturing
Melander began her career in banking. While she loved helping people manage their finances, the industry was under immense pressure. Negative energy trickled down to the employee experience, leading Erika to consider a career change.
“When I considered my skill set, personality, and career aspirations, I landed on insurance,” says Melander. “I transitioned from directly helping individuals manage their finances to helping the businesses that employ those people and invest in local economies.”
Finding Her Way to Central
At the start of her insurance career, Erika worked for a large, national insurance carrier that is culturally very different from Central. When Erika was at a point of looking at other positions with that same carrier to gain some different skills, a recruiter reached out about a job opening.
“My first Central interview was with two women in leadership positions, and it really appealed to me. That kind of representation didn’t exist in my former company, and I really value that Central supports gender equity within the insurance industry.”

Melander says Central’s longstanding connection to manufacturing was another important factor in her decision to join the team.
“Central’s commitment to the manufacturing industry has existed since the beginning. The same can’t be said for every insurance company. One of the reasons I chose this specialty is because I value what manufacturing does for people. Those who work in these facilities are not just employees; they’re our family members, friends, and neighbors. Manufacturing brings communities together and empowers people to provide for their families. Central is grounded in Midwestern values aligned with this philosophy.”

Protecting our Manufacturing Partners
According to Melander, manufacturers are notoriously risk-averse and cautious about entering into financial partnerships because those relationships can make or break their businesses.
“Manufacturers are conscious of the fact that disruptions in relationships can cause harm to their brand reputation and ability to continue doing business in the marketplace,” she explains.
Central’s extensive loss control resources are front-end resources for preventing losses before they happen. The Loss Control team identifies and works with policyholders to mitigate risks before losses occur. This proactive approach supports greater safety across the company and reduces the risk of costly shutdowns resulting from accidents.
The Central Difference
Much of a manufacturer’s success depends on following through on their commitments to their customers.
“They recognize the value of relationships with their financial partners, including their insurance carrier. Central plays an important role in helping our manufacturing partners identify, manage, and mitigate risks. We take care of them so they can focus on what matters most: running and growing their businesses.”
