The board of nib NZ has named Hanne Janes as the successor to the retiring chairman, Tony Ryall, effective from March 1.

This announcement was made by David Gordon, chairman of nib Holdings, highlighting Janes’ progression from her role as a non-executive director on the nib NZ board since 2016 to the forefront of leadership.

“I am very pleased to welcome Hanne as the new chair of nib NZ. Her years of experience on the current nib NZ board, her sector knowledge, and thorough understanding of the regulatory environment for private health insurance makes her an ideal choice,” Gordon said.

Who is Hanne Janes

Janes (pictured) brings to the table an extensive legal background, having practiced as a barrister for over 20 years with a focus on medico-legal, commercial, and corporate law, alongside her experience as a management consultant with Deloitte.

Her expertise is further underscored by her contributions to significant national inquiries, such as the Gisborne Cervical Screening Ministerial Inquiry, the Government Inquiry into Mental Health and Addiction, and the Royal Commission of Inquiry into Abuse in Care.

Her board experience extends beyond nib NZ, with Janes having served on the board of ProCare Health Limited and the ProCare Charitable Foundation, demonstrating her broad engagement with New Zealand’s health sector.

Nib NZ honours Tony Ryall

The transition serves to honour Ryall’s tenure as chairman of nib NZ, the company said.

Since joining the board in February 2015 and taking on the chairmanship in July 2016, Ryall’s leadership has been instrumental in steering nib NZ through periods of growth and change.

Gordon expressed his appreciation for Ryall’s commitment and leadership.

“I thank Tony for his dedicated service to nib NZ over the past nine years. nib NZ has benefited enormously from his leadership during this time, and we wish him well in his future endeavours,” he said.
