Lancashire Insurance US (LUS), a new division of the Lancashire Group, has officially begun operations to mark an extension of Lancashire’s global presence.

Huw Jones, who previously served as the group head of specialty insurance, has taken the helm as CEO of LUS.

“We are excited to have launched LUS and we have built a really strong team of underwriters and within our support functions. We look forward to connecting with our new trading partners and offering the underwriting expertise and excellent client service that Lancashire is renowned for,” Jones said.

The firm explained that the move will give Lancashire access to markets and business opportunities previously beyond its reach, while ensuring these new ventures align with its existing operations.

Operating under a delegated underwriting agreement with Lancashire’s UK platform, LUS will focus its operations on the US excess and surplus lines market. The company is also launching with a target on energy casualty and property insurance products.

Key appointments for Lancashire US

Key appointments have also been announced to strengthen LUS’s leadership team. Firstly, Christopher Curtin has been named head of US property, bringing over two decades of experience in both brokerage and underwriting to the role.

Curtin joined LUS in September 2023, after serving as head of US property at Everest Insurance, and holding significant positions at AIG and Aon & Integro Insurance Brokers.

Joining the energy casualty division as senior vice president is Brian Quinn, who came on board in June 2023. Quinn’s experience includes senior underwriting positions at AXA XL’s North America Energy Casualty team, XL Catlin, and Energi Insurance, a specialty MGA based in Massachusetts.

Alex Maloney, group chief executive officer of Lancashire, expressed enthusiasm about the establishment of LUS.

“This is a significant milestone in the strategic development of Lancashire, giving us access to business that we could not write before through new distribution channels and with new clients,” he said. “We are pleased to welcome the new US team to the Lancashire Group and look forward to working with them.”

Lancashire Insurance US will operate nationally under the business name Lancashire Insurance (US) LLC, while doing business as Lancashire Insurance Specialty Services.
