Invictus Games Scotland 2027 Bid Committee

28th March 2022

Dear BIBA colleague,

THE INVICTUS GAMES 2027 SCOTLAND BID

The Invictus Games Scotland 2027 Committee is in the process of preparing a bid for Scotland to host this prestigious sporting event for wounded veterans in 2027. The Committee is working in partnership with the Scottish and United Kingdom Governments, their agencies (e.g. Event Scotland and Visit Scotland), Glasgow and cities, towns and communities to design and develop the concepts which will enable Scotland to present a competitive and timely bid to the Invictus Games Foundation (IGF) in June 2023.

This renowned international adaptive multi-sport event, which first took place in 2014 in London, harnesses the power of sport to inspire recovery, support and rehabilitation; initially for the wounded, injured and sick military personnel and the veteran community, and is now evolving to demonstrate the positive impact that veterans can have and benefit society in general. The Invictus Games is about much more than just sport. It captures hearts, challenges minds, changes lives for the better and offers the opportunity to share the experience with those fortunate and less fortunate in society with the aim of delivering positive social change, and health and wellbeing outcomes, a ’shaping’ of social attitudes more broadly and, importantly, improving employment opportunities.

Hosting the Games in Scotland provides an opportunity to reinforce Scotland’s reputation as The Perfect Stage for major events and festivals, with all their economic, social, environmental, and cultural benefits. Usually, the Invictus Games are named after a city rather than a country however, as we intend that the events will involve several cities in Scotland, the IGF has given their permission, at this stage in the process, for our bid to be named with Scotland rather than having a city in the title.

The Steering Committee requires to raise approximately £600,000 for its seed funding towards the bid phase. We are seeking the support of philanthropists, individuals, charities, and companies who will support the Steering Committee by either making a donation, helping us identify potential funding sources or by becoming a supporter of the bid.

Once successful our preliminary estimates suggest that £23M will be required to fund this 2027 programme; this is likely to be offset by a positive legacy that will impact society for years to come and provide benefits of timing, scale, quality, and targeted impact to the value of some £60M. A professional fundraising organisation will support us in raising the full amount of funding required.

I very much hope that you will consider supporting our desire to prepare and present a competitive and timely bid to the Invictus Games Foundation in June 2023 and that we may be able to discuss further detail.

Yours sincerely,
