In commemoration of National Preparedness Month, the National Council of Insurance Legislators (NCOIL) has emphasized the importance of effective disaster planning amid the rising threat of severe weather events.

The initiative, led by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), aims to motivate individuals, families, and communities nationwide to proactively prepare for emergencies.

“As severe weather continues to escalate year over year, it is important now more than ever for everyone to be prepared if disaster strikes,” NCOIL president and Arkansas representative Deborah Ferguson, DDS said. “This can be as simple as having an emergency plan set in place and monitoring severe weather in your area. This month is also a great reminder to review your insurance policies to make sure that you are adequately covered so that a natural disaster doesn’t also cause financial ruin.”

NCOIL CEO and commissioner Tom Considine also highlighted the importance of having a well-rounded emergency plan besides proper insurance in place, especially for those in disaster prone areas.

“Insurance is a vital tool for individuals and businesses to mitigate the financial impact of disasters. By raising awareness about the importance of insurance in disaster preparedness, we can help protect our communities and promote resilience,” Considine said.
