Industry CEOs step up for children's cancer fundraiser

Report proposes 'self-funding' insurance model for export industries

Insurance bosses taking part in the annual CEO Dare to Cure fundraiser organised by the Children’s Cancer Institute have raised more than $83,000.

Steadfast CEO Robert Kelly, who will be taking on the Walk the Plank virtual reality challenge tomorrow in Sydney, has raised nearly $50,000 from his supporters including $35,000 from Steadfast Group.

Walk the Plank is one of seven activities that participants can select to perform their challenge. Mr Kelly and other CEOs who have opted for Walk the Plank will undertake the virtual reality challenge set on an 80-storey high skyscraper.

It will be Mr Kelly’s third straight year of taking part in the fundraiser in support of medical research for children’s cancer.

Gallagher Australia CEO Sarah Lyons has also signed up for the event, as has a team of Crawford & Company employees led by Crawford Australia President Tim Jarman.

Ms Lyons, whose supporters have so far chipped in more than $18,000, will take on the Walking on Fire and Glass challenge.

The Crawford team has opted for the Extreme Fitness challenge, where they will be put through their paces in a challenge orchestrated by fitness legend and F45 co-founder Luke Istomin.

“By getting involved in this event, I’ve learned that while 8 in 10 children who are diagnosed with cancer do survive, they are often left with life-long side effects caused by the very treatment that saved their life, including infertility,” Mr Jarman said.

“Many of the treatments given to children are the same as what adults with cancer receive and so it’s very intense on their little bodies.

“Cancer kills more children than any other disease – the work of the [Children’s Cancer Institute] is critical in creating improved treatments and hopefully even a cure.”

The Crawford team has raised more than $15,000 to date.

Crawford Head of Contractor Connection Tim Butler is taking up the Bugs for Breakfast challenge , where he will be chewing on a range of creepy crawlies tomorrow.

Learning & Development Lead Nicola Roberts will be doing the Walk the Plank challenge.

The event tomorrow at Sydney’s Fleet Steps in the Botanic Gardens starts at 6am and has raised more than $947,000.

Yesterday’s event in Melbourne – a new addition this year – raised in excess of $330,000.
