Hugh C Findlay
Hugh graduated from Mount Hermon School for Boys and Bentley College of Accounting. After graduating, he worked as an accountant in Boston and Hyannis. Hugh moved to the Cape in 1950 where throughout the years he worked for many local businesses; Kenyon Carr Jewelers, The Patriot Press, Charles Pretez CPA, Frank B Beerse CPA, Central Cape Dodge, Airport Motors, and Moore Motors. In 1962, he formed Hugh C. Findlay Insurance/Olde Cape Cod Insurance Agency.
During his working years, Hugh was involved in many other jobs, often in partnership with his wife, such as the snack bar at the Kennedy rink, Mooring Restaurant, Food service at Hyannis Harbor Tours and running the voting polls for 45 years. In his later years, he obtained his 100-ton Commercial Captain’s license and operated vessels for Hy-Line Cruises. Hugh was very proud of his second career. He loved serving the Town of Barnstable; he was elected to the Planning Board, served as a town meeting member, formed and was the first chairperson of the Capital Outlay Committee, worked on three Charter commissions and much more.
Hugh was also a member of the Kennedy Memorial Trust Fund committee and was active in Rotary. He was also very proud of having served as elected Moderator of the Hyannis Fire Department. Hugh was active in Masonry; he served as Master of the Fraternal Lodge in Centerville, District Deputy Grand Master, High Priest of the Orient Chapter and District Deputy Grand High Priest as well as founder and Illustrious Master of the Cape Cod Council. Hugh was also active in scouting and was the first Cub master of the Pack at the Federated Church. He was longtime member, since 1956, of the Hyannis Yacht Club and served on most of the committees, was Commodore (2 years) then Treasurer for many years. Hugh also served as Chairman of the Dunbar’s Point Trust.
The Federated Church was Hugh’s most important function. He was a long-time member having started in 1950 with the church choir where he was still singing up to the time of his passing. Hugh served on all committees and was past President. He was the chairman of the building committee when the church on Main Street was built and on other occasions when improvements were made. Hugh was also the leader for many fund-raising opportunities. His love of God and the teachings of Jesus Christ dominated much of his life and the many decisions he had to make.
Visiting hours will take place Friday, June 09, 2023 from 4 PM to 7 PM at The Federated Church of Hyannis, 320 Main Street Hyannis MA 02601. A Memorial Service will follow at the church on Saturday June 10, 2023 at 11 AM.
