The Insurance Council of Australia (ICA) has introduced a new recruitment initiative developed by M&C Saatchi Group, aimed at attracting talent to the general insurance sector.

This launch aligns with the release of the insurance watchdog’s “Insurance Industry Talent Roadmap,” a strategic six-year plan to tackle workforce issues in an industry facing significant demographic shifts.

The roadmap identified several key challenges for the sector, including a shortage of skilled workers, the effects of climate change on insurance workloads, and the need for more diversity in recruitment. It serves as a guide for insurers and the ICA in addressing these issues while emphasising the importance of showcasing the industry’s strengths.

ICA’s It’s Our Policy campaign

The campaign, titled “It’s Our Policy,” features employees currently working in the insurance industry and seeks to highlight less well-known career opportunities.

By spotlighting the contributions these professionals make, the initiative aims to demonstrate the range of roles available within insurance.

This project supports the ICA’s broader goal of building a workforce capable of meeting both current and future challenges, particularly as 30% of the industry’s workers are expected to retire by 2030.

“We know from our research that we have more to do to tell the story of how a career in insurance aligns with career seekers’ values and aspirations, and we’re confident that we’ve been able to do this with this new campaign,” he said, as reported by Campaign Brief.

The campaign was developed after consultation with several working groups from the insurance sector, using research-driven insights to shape the messaging.

Michael McEwan, CEO of M&C Saatchi Group, emphasised the collective effort behind the campaign, stating that the initiative reflects input from multiple players across the industry, facilitated under the leadership of the ICA.

The campaign has been rolled out across platforms including digital, broadcast video on demand (BVOD), social media, and outdoor advertising in New South Wales and Queensland, with plans to extend nationally by 2025.

ANZIIF supports ICA’s Insurance Industry Talent Roadmap

In support of these efforts, the Australian and New Zealand Institute of Insurance and Finance (ANZIIF) has launched its own initiative to address the industry’s talent shortage.

The Claims Handler Career Pathway program provides detailed information for professionals looking to advance in the claims handling sector, including skill-building resources and certification opportunities.

ANZIIF CEO Katrina Shanks said that the pathway is designed to help claims professionals map out their careers while improving customer service outcomes.

The ICA’s efforts, including the recruitment campaign and the Talent Roadmap, are part of a larger push to enhance diversity and resilience within the insurance industry. While some progress has been made, the ICA acknowledged that more work is required to meet the sector’s evolving needs.
