Heffernan Insurance Brokers, one of the largest independent insurance brokerage firms in the United States, has expanded its Women Empowered (WE) initiative with the introduction of a formal mentorship program, new networking opportunities, and a focus on career development and training.

The WE group, established in early 2022, aims to create an inclusive and supportive environment for women at Heffernan. The group’s mission is to encourage positive change, boost confidence, and promote leadership within the workplace.

Despite the progress made, Heffernan said that challenges still exist that can impede women’s advancement in organizations.

Kelsey Becker (pictured above), project and operations manager and co-chair of the WE group, noted the significance of working alongside female colleagues and observing the changes brought about by the initiative.

Becker also emphasized the ongoing commitment of the WE group to support and recognize the achievements of women within the company.

Heffernan, where more than 70% of the workforce is female, recognizes the importance of diversity and is dedicated to hiring and promoting more women within the organization.

Kate Grasman, chief information officer, highlighted the value of the mentorship program, describing it as a powerful experience for both mentors and mentees. Grasman pointed out that the program fosters connections across the company, facilitating the exchange of stories, ideas, and ways of working.

Leticia Trevino, chief operations officer and co-chair of the WE group, expressed pride in the efforts to empower and support women within the company. Trevino stressed that the mission of the WE group goes beyond a statement, representing a commitment to building an environment where women can succeed both personally and professionally.

The WE group has seen a 114% increase in mentorship program participants from 2022 to 2024. Heffernan plans to continue investing in career development and training, organizing events that empower and inspire employees.

The WE group’s goal is to ensure that all employees feel heard, valued, respected, and have a sense of belonging, contributing to a thriving work environment at Heffernan.
