Health Insurance after Marriage

Health Insurance after Marriage

Wedding season is in full bloom from early spring to fall. Planning your wedding and a future together is a time full of excitement, love, and joy. Marriage is a wonderful union of two people who intend to spend the rest of their lives together. A healthy marriage relies on good communication, mutual support, love, and respect.

Since marriage is a qualifying life event, you will be eligible to enroll in or change your health insurance within 60 days of your marriage. You will have to review which option works best for you and your spouse. Is one or both of you offered insurance by an employer? Do you have a child together or is a step-child going to be a part of your new family? If you are offered premium assistance from Covered CA, how will marriage impact your eligibility for premium assistance? There are plenty of questions that need to be addressed to make the right health insurance for your new family.

Option 1) Offered insurance by an employer:

If you or your spouse are offered insurance by an employer, please review the plan benefits & premiums as a household. Some employers will offer a generous benefits package while others will not cover the cost of a spouse or children

Option 2) Take advantage of Covered CA for premium assistance

Eligibility for premium assistance through Covered CA depends on your age, household size, household modified adjusted gross income, and zip code. If you are offered insurance by an employer, generally speaking, you are ineligible for premium assistance from Covered CA.

Option 3) Off-exchange (direct-to-carrier)

If your household modified adjusted gross income is above the cutoff for premium assistance from Covered CA, you may want to review the plans off-exchange/direct-to-carrier. There are some additional health insurance plans off-exchange that are not available through the Covered CA exchange. In addition, the Silver 70 plans are more expensive through Covered CA vs off-exchange.
