The promotion comes at a time when the firm is expanding its presence across Asia to meet the demands of an increasingly complex regulatory environment in the region.

Welcoming Hui to the Hong Kong team, Simon McConnell, chair of Clyde & Co’s APAC board and a partner in the Hong Kong office, said the company’s focus remains on expanding its reach across the APAC region and providing legal solutions to increasingly complex and contentious insurance issues.

“Hermonie’s appointment allows us to capitalise on the vibrant regional insurance market and bolster the firm’s strong regional team of specialist lawyers,” he said.

Hui’s litigation practice covers a wide range of insurance-related matters, including defending personal injury and employees’ compensation claims. She also works on claims under public liability, contractor’s all risk, property fire, and motor policies.

Additionally, Hui regularly advises insurers on policy interpretation, coverage disputes, and other policy-related issues.

Gloria Jones, a partner at Clyde & Co in Hong Kong, praised Hui’s contributions, including being a key in growing the company’s insurance practice.

“Hermonie has been instrumental in building out our practice and further growing our market share in these areas, as well as providing clients with exceptional support. Her promotion is testament to the exceptional talent we have at the firm,” she said.

Hui said she looks forward to leveraging Clyde & Co’s global insurance network to deliver exceptional service to clients.

“I look forward to further growing the practice in what has been a very dynamic environment marked by increasing regulatory complexity and to leveraging the firm’s exceptional global insurance capabilities,” she said.

Clyde & Co’s recent appointments

In recent months, the firm has made a series of promotions across the APAC region.

Earlier this year, Paul Collier was promoted to partner in Singapore. In Australia, the firm promoted seven partners in 2024, including in Sydney, Brisbane, and Melbourne. Additionally, Jenny Thornton was appointed managing partner of the Perth office.

The firm has announced 34 promotions in the APAC region so far this year, reflecting its strategic focus on growing its footprint in key markets.

The Hong Kong Insurance Authority (IA) recently rolled out updates in its Conduct in Focus publication, which includes new compliance rules aimed at insurance brokers, particularly those working with clients from Mainland China.

Additionally, the IA has introduced licensing fees for insurance intermediaries, following the end of a five-year waiver. These regulatory changes are set to impact insurers and brokers alike, reshaping how they operate in the evolving market.
