Fuelling Around podcast: Jon Culshaw on making a hilarious impression

Funnyman Jon Culshaw is the latest celebrity guest to discuss his career and love of all things automotive on Fuelling Around.

The impressionist and long-time friend of podcast co-host Dave Vitty is a big fan of Fords and cars from the 1970s, as he reveals during the show’s second offering from series four.

The Dead Ringers star also reveals his two-car fantasy garage and dream drive in between having old pal ‘Comedy Dave’ and Jason Plato in hysterics with a series of tales and astounding impressions.

How did Jon Culshaw become a world-class impressionist?

If you only tuned in halfway through the episode, you’d be forgiven for thinking Patrick Moore, David Attenborough, Jeremy Clarkson, Frank Bruno and Lennox Lewis had joined the boys to chat about cars.

But that’s because the actor and comedian has honed his craft for years to pull off takes that make him one of the finest and most-respected imitators of voices in the world.

“The more people respond and the more they laugh and the more they sort of recognise what you’re doing, it does egg you on,” said the Lancastrian.

“It makes for a nice atmosphere if you’re taking people off and so on and people laugh at it. Then the next thing I’d notice, the characters on TV – the likes of Patrick Moore and watching the Mike Yarwood show – and then you start noticing other people on TV and copying their voices too.

“(In Patrick Moore’s voice) I always love the scientific experts, Patrick Moore, very, very eccentric. (In David Attenborough’s voice) David Attenborough, the same. In those days he spoke in that sort of way, now, of course, (changes voice to an older David) he’s like an elder statesman Jedi and could probably be the entire president of not only the world but I would also say the solar system.”
