Bermuda-based Fortitude Re has announced the promotion of Jamie Schmerer to the position of senior vice president, enterprise risk.
In his new role, Schmerer will be at the forefront of Fortitude Re’s enterprise risk management framework. His responsibilities will extend to leading the company’s regulatory relations in Bermuda and supervising the operational risk function to ensure its effective integration.
Previously holding the position of senior vice president, head of internal audit at Fortitude Re, Schmerer has played a key role within the company since joining in 2019.
His career before Fortitude Re included a leadership position at KPMG Bermuda, where he was key in the internal audit and risk consulting practice, offering advice to clientele across the insurance, reinsurance, banking, and asset management sectors.
In addition to his role at Fortitude Re, Schmerer has also been recently appointed to the board of the Association of Bermuda Insurers and Reinsurers (ABIR).
“I am honored to serve on the board of directors for this organization, which is vital to the growth and success of the reinsurance industry in Bermuda. I look forward to working with my fellow directors to advance advocacy and foster meaningful change both within the industry and the Bermuda community,” Schmerer said, reflecting on his appointment to the board.
Ming Zhang, chief risk officer at Fortitude Re, commented on the promotion that is set to bolster the firm’s enterprise risk practice.
“Jamie’s expertise, coupled with his track record of success makes him an ideal candidate for this role. Jamie’s appointment highlights our commitment to our team-mates’ growth and opportunity at Fortitude Re and is a testament to our culture and deep bench of talent, of which we are immensely proud,” Zhang said.
Earlier this year, the reinsurer also made strides in its charity efforts with a financial contribution of $100,000 to the 100 Black Men of Middle Tennessee, Inc., a notable non-profit focused on enhancing the educational and social development of Black male students.
