Emergence Insurance’s inaugural Cyber SyncUp Conference 2024 attracted over 250 insurance brokers, offering a comprehensive one-day event focused on expanding cyber knowledge within the insurance sector.
The CPD-accredited event took place at the State Library of NSW in Sydney. It aimed to equip brokers with the necessary expertise to provide in-depth cyber guidance to their clients.
According to a post-event survey, attendee feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with 77% rating the event as “excellent” and 23% as “very good.”

The conference began with an introduction from Emergence CEO and founder Troy Filipcevic, followed by a series of presentations from industry experts:
Joe Smith, acting deputy national cyber security coordinator and assistant secretary of the National Office of Cyber Security, who discussed navigating cyber threats
Chris Burgess, director of cyber and technology PI at Markel International, who spoke on global trends, claims drivers, and premium rates in cyber insurance
Darren Hopkins, partner at McGrathNicol, who provided a live hacking demonstration in his presentation titled “Behind the Firewall”
Three partners from various law firms who addressed current issues in cyber and privacy law
Representatives from Triskele Labs who shared frontline cyber incident stories
Two senior public relations professionals who discussed managing crises
Two forensic accountants who detailed strategies for managing cyber business interruption risk and recovery
a concluding panel session on the anatomy of a cyber claim.
“The energy throughout the whole day was phenomenal,” Filipcevic said. “At Emergence, we try to support the broker community through training and awareness, as well as offering market-leading cyber insurance solutions.”

The event, held on May 15, provided brokers with insights into the cyber threat landscape, legislative changes, crisis management after cyber incidents, and financial recovery from cyber losses.
The program also included real-world examples of cyber claims and incident response strategies.
Looking ahead, Filipcevic announced plans to make the conference an annual event.
“Our aim is to help brokers have better cyber conversations with their clients and they need to be well informed to do that. It was an enlightening and invaluable day for insurance brokers who’re committed to enhancing their cyber expertise,” he said.
