Club 4X4 Insurance (Club 4X4), a Maroochydore-headquartered specialist off-road insurer, recently joined the K’gari (formerly Fraser Island) clean-up event in observance of National Volunteer Week.

The event, sponsored annually by Club 4X4, was organised by Four Wheel Drive Queensland (4WD QLD) in cooperation with the Queensland Department of Environment and Science (DES), Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS), and the Butchulla Aboriginal Corporation (BAC).

Over the course of three days, volunteers managed to collect over 6.5 tonnes of marine debris.

Tangaroa Blue Foundation handled the weighing and sorting of the collected debris, contributing the data to its extensive database, the largest in the Southern Hemisphere. This data aids the Australian government and research bodies in creating strategies to tackle marine waste at its source.

Club 4X4, a recurring platinum sponsor, reported collecting 45 kilograms of rubbish from the shoreline at Orchid Beach. Among the items found was a GPS tracking beacon, which Tangaroa Blue intends to refurbish for future waste tracking efforts.

“The K’gari Clean Up is a fantastic initiative and a great immersion experience for our team, highlighting how much the 4X4 community value our pristine spaces. As sponsors of 4WD QLD, we’re honoured to work side-by-side with their members restoring the world’s largest sand island,” said Tony Mitchell, CEO of Club 4X4.

The K’gari Clean Up by 4WD QLD operates solely on sponsor funding and does not receive government financial support. The annual event attracts over 800 volunteers from the 45 member clubs of 4WD QLD, all working to preserve the UNESCO World Heritage-listed national park.
