Lyla Dang, an international student, has been awarded the 2023 Chubb Life Victoria University Actuarial Scholarship, securing a significant achievement through her participation in the university’s “twinning” program.

In this educational path, Dang initially pursued 18 months of study at the University of Economics in Ho Chi Minh City, her home city. Subsequently, she transitioned to Victoria University in Wellington, focusing on finance and actuarial studies.

Chubb Life’s scholarship offers Dang a three-month hands-on experience in the actuarial team, accompanied by a cash prize of $5,000.

“For me, the most interesting part of my studies has been understanding how you quantify risk. Normally it’s not tangible or something you can see with your eyes, but for insurance companies it’s essential to help with premiums and pricing,” Dang said.

She also emphasised the essence of insurance in everyday life and advocating for a greater understanding of its importance within communities.

“Practical experience is very important alongside study. This internship will help me with future exams and to develop real-life skills on the job. I’m excited to be working in a professional environment for the first time and looking forward to making meaningful connections in the team and industry,” she said.

The Chubb Life Actuarial Scholarship, established in 2015, coincided with the commencement of Victoria University of Wellington’s actuarial science program. Dang is the eighth recipient of this scholarship, empowering students in the early stages of their actuarial journey.

“It’s pleasing to see a talent like Lyla in our field, which is considered quite specialised. I was impressed with her passion and dedication to excellence,” Chubb Life chief actuary Michael Bartram said. “This scholarship is one way of supporting the actuarial profession which is such an important part of the insurance industry. It’s great for students to get the opportunity to connect and apply their knowledge to real world concepts.”

Dang is set to embark on her internship with Chubb Life on Nov. 13.
