Celebrating a Socially Distanced Holiday Season
No one is dreaming of a quarantined Christmas, but with the coronavirus knocking at our door, this is might be a good year to rethink your holiday traditions and find new ways to spread cheer.
Here are some socially distanced (but fun) suggestions on how you can still bring joy to this favorite time of year.
Send a Card
Whether it’s a paper card you drop in the mailbox or a virtual ecard, sending a card is a great way to let loved ones know you’re thinking about them.
Send Some Flowers
Who doesn’t like getting flowers or a balloon delivered to them (even guys can appreciate it)? A great way to spread holiday cheer and beauty is by sending a holiday-themed Christmas arrangement. Working with a local florist or an online supplier, you’re sure to find a bouquet that captures your sentiment during this festive season.
Pandemic Parade
You’ve seen the birthday parades organized over the summer where friends and neighbors decorate their vehicles with signs and balloons and drive by the home of the birthday boy or girl. It’s a thrill for kids and adults alike, especially older folks who are homebound. Just change up the theme for the holidays and organize your own seasonal parade for someone you love. Note: You must check with local authorities first regarding restrictions on these types of events in your city or town.
Have a Digital Party
Invite your friends and neighbors to gather together virtually via one of your favorite video conference platforms. Give it a holiday twist by asking participants to wear an ugly Christmas sweater or prepare their favorite holiday goodies to enjoy virtually. You could also organize a holiday-themed game or talk about your favorite holiday memory.
Host a Holiday Watch Party
TeleParty (formerly Netflix Party), YouTube Party, and Facebook Watch Party are gaining in popularity. These platforms allow you to watch your favorite movies and videos with others simultaneously.
Host an Outdoor Event
If you live in a milder climate or you don’t mind bundling up and braving the snow, build a fire in the fire pit, get out the video projector to show your favorite Christmas movies, warm up the hot chocolate, and invite a limited number friends and family over for an outdoor holiday party. Ask everyone to wear a mask and maintain their distance. Make mask wearing into a contest by holding an ugly Christmas mask contest. Don’t be afraid to ask invitees to stay home if they’re not feeling well. Be sure to check the current restrictions of your area before hosting any in-person event.
