Car Insurance Group Checker

Lined of parked cars from different car insurance groups.

All cars in the UK are categorised under a particular car insurance group, ranging from 1 to 50. These groups are used by insurance companies so they can figure out how much your car insurance premium should be. Group 1 features the cars which are the cheapest to insure, whilst Group 50 includes the cars which are the most expensive to insure. You can read more about car insurance groups in our article here: Car Insurance Groups [A Complete Guide]

Car Insurance Group Letters: what do they mean?

When you get an insurance group rating for your car, not only will you see a number, but you’ll also get a letter rating too (e.g., 10D). But what does the letter mean?

The letter is used to grade what level of security has been fitted as standard on a vehicle. It’s important that vehicles meet security requirements, especially for cars categorised under higher insurance groups which cost less to insure.

There are 6 car insurance group letters:

A: Car is accepted as meeting all security requirements for its group.

D: Car doesn’t meet the requirements for its insurance group and is therefore placed in a higher insurance group.

E: Car exceeds security requirements and is therefore placed in a lower insurance group.

P: This is used when the data for the rating system was incomplete when the car was launched.

U: The car’s security is regarded as unacceptable. The car is still insurable, but drivers should be aware that some insurers may insist on upgrading the car’s security before offering cover.

G: Vehicles that are classed as imports are listed under this letter.
