Canopius Group has announced the expansion of its global credit & political risk team with the addition of four new members.

Angelos Deftereos has been appointed as head of structured credit, with Boris Medimorec and Virad Patel joining as underwriters, all based in London.

Meanwhile, Dimitri Plastiras has been tapped to join as an underwriter in APAC. He will take up the role in Sydney before moving to Singapore later in the year.

New Canopius hires

Deftereos brings over 20 years of industry experience to Canopius, moving from his role as managing director – structured finance at Volante Global. He has a background in significant risk transfer insurance and has held key positions at AXA XL, Morgan Stanley, Aon, Marsh, and Goldman Sachs.

Medimorec – formerly with UK Export Finance, AJ Gallagher, and MUFG – has over 25 years of experience spanning various markets, sectors, and debt products. His expertise includes both banking and insurance.

Patel joins Canopius from ING where he spent 10 years working in risk, origination, and distribution. His most recent role was vice president for loan capital markets.

Plastiras was previously the associate director for debt advisory services at KPMG in Sydney. He also had a 12-year tenure at Westpac, where he was involved in structured asset finance, trade finance, and financial institutions.

“High-calibre professionals”

Patrick Sheriff, head of credit & political risk in London, commented on the appointments in an emailed release. He referred to the new hires as “high-calibre professionals” and said their addition reflects Canopius’ long-term commitment to strengthening its “lead position in this market”.

“Their collective skillset diversifies and complements our existing pool of expertise,” he said.

Jamie Jeffers, who heads the team in APAC, also remarked: “Credit & political risk remains a key global class of business for Canopius, particularly with the rising economic and political volatility on the international stage.

“We are delighted to welcome Dimitri to the team in APAC, further strengthening our capacity to support clients in managing their evolving risks.”
