Bermuda International Long Term Insurers and Reinsurers (BILTIR) has announces significant changes to its leadership, including appointing Suzanne Williams-Charles (pictured above, left) as the organization’s first chief executive officer.

Who is Suzanne Williams-Charles?

Williams-Charles is set to assume her role at BILTIR in April, bringing over 25 years of experience in the insurance industry, with a notable focus on regulatory aspects for 15 years. Her previous position was with the Association of Bermuda Insurers and Reinsurers (ABIR) as director of policy and regulation, corporate secretary, and data privacy officer. There, she led the Bermuda office and managed public outreach initiatives.

According to LinkedIn, before her tenure at ABIR, Williams-Charles served as the deputy director of insurance supervision at the Bermuda Monetary Authority (BMA), where she was responsible for overseeing both group and individual insurance entities. She also represented the Bermuda Monetary Authority in various working groups of the International Association of Insurance Supervisors (IAIS).

Current executive director of BILTIR, Christine Patton, will aid in the leadership transition over the next few months before her departure in April.

Additionally, BILTIR announced the departure of Curtis Dickinson from his role as executive advisor, although he will continue to provide support on an ad hoc basis. It has now turned to David Altmaier (pictured above, right), former Commissioner of Insurance for Florida, to fill the position.

Who is David Altmaier?

Altmaier’s background includes serving as Florida’s Insurance Commissioner from 2016 to 2022, overseeing one of the world’s largest insurance markets. He has also been actively involved in both national and international insurance regulatory policy, including roles as president of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) in 2021 and vice chair of the Executive Committee for the International Association of Insurance Supervisors (IAIS).

Natasha Scotland Courcy, chair of BILTIR, commented on the new appointments, highlighting the valuable experience both Williams-Charles and Altmaier bring to the organization.

“I would [also] like to thank Christine Patton for her support over the last year in helping to continue to build on BILTIR’s advocacy infrastructure both locally and internationally, alongside our members. I’d also like to thank Curtis Dickinson for all of the work he’s done with us over the last year to help bolster our advocacy efforts on behalf of our members,” Scotland Courcy said.
