Avia is providing more cover for alternatively fuelled vehicles

We understand that alternatively fuelled vehicles have different demands, which is why we’ve increased our covers for both hybrid and fully electric vehicles across our Fleet and Minifleet products. 

What’s new?

During the latter part of 2023, we introduced the following additional covers as standard, which further protect customers who use hybrid and/or fully electric vehicle(s):

Cover is effective immediately for new business customers and for renewals dated 18th February 2024 onward for existing customers.

Charge Points – Cover added for where damage occurs to the charging postCharging Cables and Connecting Components – Cover added for charging cable, adaptor or refuelling connecting componentsElectric Vehicle Battery – Cover for damage to the vehicle’s high voltage battery, caused by any power surge whilst the battery is being charged

And for fully electric vehicles we’ve also added:

Electric Vehicle out of charge recovery – Cover for charging a fully electric vehicle’s high voltage battery, with enough power to get to the nearest working public charge point

Why have we made these changes?

From 2035, the Government will end the sale of new petrol and diesel cars and vans. This is already having an impact, with many businesses either already making the switch or starting to consider the merits of an electric or alternatively fuelled fleet.We’re committed to our Net Zero by 2040 ambition and we want to better support you as the UK transitions to electric vehicles (EVs).

Aviva’s Head of Corporate Motor, Tom Pitney, shares his insights:

‘Following research undertaken with fleet operators, we’ve looked at providing covers that actually address their needs. An overwhelming concern for them was range anxiety. That’s why we’ve partnered with the RAC to give our customers a boost at the roadside or, if this isn’t possible, take them to the nearest working charge point.

We also identified a potential gap in cover for our commercial customers who provide charge points to their employees. Most commercial and personal property policies will exclude these. As such we’ve extended the cover under our policy to make sure that they have the level of protection they need.

As well as policy level changes, we’re continuing to develop new Loss Prevention Standards via our Aviva Risk Management Team, that provide practical and risk focused advice in several areas including alternatively fuelled vehicles.

These changes help demonstrate that the customer is at the centre of the decisions we make and will support Aviva achieving its ambition to become the number one insurer of Electric Vehicles in the UK by 2030.’
