Aspen Insurance Holdings, a global insurance company, has announced the appointment of John Welch (pictured above) as chief underwriting officer for reinsurance, effective June 26.

Welch has more than 30 years of industry experience. He previously served as chief executive for domestic markets at AXA XL Re. He has also held senior roles at AXA XL, XL Catlin Group, and XL Group.

In his new position, Welch will assume responsibility for Aspen Reinsurance, overseeing the development and execution of the underwriting strategy for this segment. He will report to Christian Dunleavy, group chief underwriting officer, and join the group executive committee.

“John is an excellent addition to the Aspen family,” Dunleavy said. “He is an established leader in the reinsurance industry with an impressive track record of building new businesses and driving profitable growth. John will play a crucial role in driving Aspen’s ambitious agenda for its reinsurance segment.”

“I am surprised by the quality and expertise of Aspen’s team and the strong results of ASpen and its reinsurance segment,” Welch said. “The business is at an exciting point, and I look forward to working with Aspen Re’s customers on their risk management challenges.”

Welch is the latest addition to Aspen’s roster. In March, the company appointed David Altmaier to its board as a non-executive director. In February, it named Yasmin Saleh as head of corporate communications.
