As Home Insurance Rates Rise, some customers may get some help

Should I Sell It, Or Insure It?

Our agency recently received a notification that Citizens Property Insurance Customers could get some premium assistance through a pilot program called the Homeowner Assistance Fund (HAF).  Although the program is noted to be assisting those that are in financial hardship due to COVID-19, I speculate that this is due to the rising cost of property insurance, not necessarily due to the pandemic.

Rates are increasing at a much higher rate than cost of living increases and inflation causing some homeowners to go without insurance or buy a policy with less coverage.  The Florida Department of Economic Opportunity (DEO) is offering this “potential” financial assistance to Florida homeowners who currently have residential insurance with Citizens Property Insurance Corporation.  However, if the pilot is successful, it may be available to more than just Citizens customers.

I believe this is more of a reaction to the increasing premium costs on the property market due to frivolous lawsuits, unethical contractors and fraud. To learn more about this, visit Floridians for Lawsuit Reform and make sure Floridian lawmakers know that we have had enough.

For now, if you have been identified by Citizens to “possibly qualify” for the Premium Relief Fund through the Florida DEO, you can call 833-987-8998 or email them at HomeownersAssistanceFund@DEO.myflorida.com.
