Young insurance leaders are carving out a space for themselves and are helping reshape the industry’s future.

Among these dynamic professionals is Kelsey Hazelton, who was recently recognized as one of Insurance Business Canada’s Top 50 Rising Stars for 2023.

Hazelton is 28 years old and currently works as a commercial marketer at McFarlan Rowlands Insurance Brokers. Since joining the industry in 2016, she has earned CIP and CPIB designations, a commercial insurance certificate, and is pursuing the CMGA designation.

But aside from growing her skillset, Hazelton has also chosen to expand her impact in the broker channel by getting involved in teaching and education.

“It’s rewarding, and giving back is the best part, especially the broker channel, which I love,” she said. “I’m now in a position where I can share that knowledge with people who have no experience, in some cases, and lead them on the path to success on their exam and career.”

In her mission to share her knowledge with those who are still starting in the industry, Hazelton has become a facilitator for the RIBO Level 1 Licensing Course at the Insurance Brokers Association of Ontario. She has also been appointed to the London Insurance Brokers Association board of directors.

“Being solutions-focused in this industry is huge,” she said further. “I’m very driven, in general, but especially when it comes to my job; I’m disciplined in what I’m doing and prioritize being a team player in this industry, which is all about relationships.”

Insurance Business Canada’s Rising Stars are all under age 35, chosen for their talent and emerging expertise by an independent panel of industry leaders.

“Talent goes beyond knowing the technical component of their job,” said D.B. Solutions owner Dionne Bowers, who was part of the panel. “Young professionals need to be committed to change in the community, whether insurance or otherwise. Every Rising Star must possess critical thinking, leadership, problem-solving, and soft skills to succeed.”
