Hudson Structured Capital Management Ltd., the reinsurance asset manager that does its investment business as HSCM Bermuda, has announced a raft of promotions across the business within its senior team.

The investment manager, that was founded by Michael Millette and counts insurtech, insurance-linked securities (ILS) and transportation among its strategies, has made a number of significant changes, demonstrating the strength in-depth of its team.

First, Jeff Sangster, who joined HSCM back in 2019 and was previously known for his time as a Validus senior executive, has now been named Chief Operating Officer (COO) and Head of Strategy for the investment manager.

Sangster has been HSCM’s Chief Financial Officer and Head of Strategy since joining in 2019.

The new position will see Sangster overseeing all non-investment functions for HSCM, including Finance, Human Resources, Legal, Compliance, and Corporate Operations.

Working alongside him will be Matt Berdoff, who has now been promoted to become Deputy Chief Operating Officer (COO), in addition to his existing responsibilities as Head of Investor Relations for HSCM.

Berdoff has worked at HSCM since its inception in 2016, and now, as well as his IR work, he will work alongside Sangster to lead the firm’s non-investment functions and strategic initiatives onshore.

Next, Bernard Opoku has been named Managing Director and Chief Financial Officer (CFO), replacing Sangster in that role to lead the Hudson Structured Capital Management Finance function.

Opoku joined HSCM in 2018 as a Controller in the Finance team, moving up to become a Managing Director and the Chief Accounting Officer before this promotion. He previously worked for KPMG in Bermuda, as Senior Manager in its Insurance Linked Securities practice.

“We are thrilled to have Jeff stepping up to COO,” Michael Millette, Managing Partner of HSCM commented. “Together with Matt, Jeff’s leadership will help guide HSCM’s growth trajectory thoughtfully and strategically in the coming years.

“Bernard has done a wonderful job since joining our team five years ago and I cannot think of a better fit to take over for Jeff in the CFO seat.”

“I am excited for this next step at HSCM and look forward to working closely with Michael, Matt, and our extremely talented team to support our investment teams and continue to deliver value for our clients,” added Sangster.

In addition, Andrew Sagon been promoted to Managing Director at HSCM and Partner in HSCM Ventures, the insurtech-focused venture capital arm of the firm.

Sagon has worked at HSCM since 2018, joining from Willis Towers Watson and serving as a Managing Director at HSCM since 2021.

Sagon will be tasked with working closely with Vikas Singhal and Michael Millette in managing the HSCM Ventures portfolios.

“Andrew has been a key contributor to the success of HSCM’s venture platform since joining the firm, and we are delighted to continue our work with him to lead and build HSCM Ventures,” Singhal explained.
