Motorists Delay Servicing Due to Cost-of-Living Inflation
Many motorists in the UK are grappling with the burden of rising living costs, leading them to postpone or handle their vehicle servicing themselves, according to a recent survey. The study, which involved 2,000 private and motor trade drivers, revealed that 10% of respondents have delayed their next service for up to a year to save money.
Moreover, 5% have taken it a step further by deferring vehicle checks for over a year, relying solely on the annual MOT test to ensure their car remains roadworthy.
Furthermore, the survey highlighted that 9% of drivers have chosen cheaper servicing options, such as substituting a full or major service for a minor one.
Similarly, 8% have switched from their regular motor trade mechanic to a more affordable one in a bid to save cash.
The escalation of inflation has undoubtedly contributed to higher vehicle servicing prices, as affirmed by research conducted by the Motor Ombudsman, which identifies rising costs as the primary operational challenge faced by independent garages and franchised motor trade dealers in 2023.
However, neglecting proper car maintenance poses significant risks for drivers, ranging from inconvenient breakdowns to exorbitant repair bills when critical components fail.
The extent of service provided will largely depend on the chosen type, with a full service typically encompassing an oil and filter change, fluid checks, a thorough brake inspection, and examination of over 50 other essential components, including safety-related features.
For a more comprehensive (and costly) service, a wider array of components may be inspected and replaced, including spark plugs and various crucial filters, while factors such as wheel alignment and suspension may also be assessed.
Vehicle servicing typically comprises of inspections, maintenance, and repairs aimed at ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the vehicle.
This typically includes checks on oil, tires, brakes, suspension, exhaust, and other components. Fluid top-ups and oil filter changes, if necessary, are also part of the service.
Additionally, car services may involve minor repairs such as belt tightening and timing adjustments, as well as more extensive repairs.
It is important to note that a car service should not be mistaken for an MOT, which is a legal requirement for cars older than three years.
An interim service serves as a less comprehensive version of a full service and is typically conducted every six months or after 6,000 miles, whichever comes first.
Although it is helpful in addressing any issues before they escalate, it should not replace a full service. On the other hand, a full service represents the most extensive type of servicing available to motorists and plays a vital role in maintaining the vehicle’s optimal condition.
For higher-end vehicles, older cars, or particularly expensive models, a manufacturer service may be necessary. Information regarding this can be found in the motor trade manufacturer’s handbook, and the service would need to be carried out at the manufacturer’s garage or motor trade dealership.
These services are often more expensive and exclusively utilize official parts and fluids, administered by professionals affiliated with the manufacturer.
Additionally, a major service entails a more comprehensive version of a full service, involving a broad range of component replacements and fixes.
The recommended service level depends on your annual mileage and varies according to your vehicle usage.
Most manufacturers advise scheduling a service at least once a year or every 12,000 miles, whichever comes first, although this may differ based on your specific vehicle and driving style.
Some vehicles now operate with extended mileage intervals between services by utilizing high-quality lubricants.
Also, a complete service history can add value if you plan on selling, as prospective buyers will then have greater confidence in their purchase.
When it comes to choosing between a mobile mechanic or a local garage mechanic, both have their advantages and disadvantages, but either will undoubtedly carry out a more professional job than a DIY version!
