The 2022 Audi S8 isn’t much different from the previous model year. However, it’s now the only way to get an A8 with a V-8, it has a lower starting price, and it’s updated with some subtle exterior alterations as well as new standalone option packages.

For 2022, the S8 receives subtle exterior updates that include a wider version of its already-large grille. The chrome angles that make up the grille design also come in black with the optional Black Optic Plus package.

The S8 we drove was equipped with the Black Optic Plus package, as indicated by its black 21-inch wheels and other black exterior bits, including the mirrors and Audi’s four-ring logos on the front and back.

Now that the A8 is no longer offered with a V-8, the S8 is the only way to get the most powerful engine. It makes 563 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque and pairs with an eight-speed automatic and all-wheel drive.

The S8’s powertrain remains the same as a 2020 model we tested that hit 60 mph in 3.2 seconds and completed the quarter-mile in 11.6 seconds at 119 mph.

The S8 measures more than 17 feet overall, but thanks to its rear-axle steering, Audi says the sedan has a turning radius of about 42 feet from curb to curb.

Every S8 has an adaptive air suspension that helps provide a pillowy ride. Its handling becomes more impressive with the optional Predictive Adaptive Suspension ($6000), which includes electromechanical actuators that better manage the sedan’s body motions.

The inside of the 2022 S8 is predictably upscale, with attractive materials and the expected tech features, including a digital gauge cluster and dual touchscreens on the center stack.

Any large luxury sedan worth its salt needs a spacious back seat, and with a 123.2-inch wheelbase, the S8’s rear seat offers 44.3 inches of legroom, which is virtually the same as that of the BMW 7-series and a half-inch greater than the Mercedes-Benz S500.

Although it wasn’t on our test car, the available Rear Seat Comfort package brings a four-seat configuration and a full-length center console complete with folding tables. The two back seats also include heated and ventilated cushions along with massage functions.

The 2022 S8 starts at $118,995—$14,250 less than last year’s model. Still, that represents a premium of $31,400 over the 2022 A8.
