PARKERSBURG — A local automobile and truck dealership was awarded a 2022 Health Plan Hero Award in a ceremony held March 29 in Washington.

Matheny Motors leadership earned recognition for its outstanding employer-sponsored health program by national healthcare industry professionals in a program developed by the national non-profit organization Patients Rising, which recognizes companies with health plans that expand access to care while lowering costs for patients.

“Employer-sponsored insurance used to be the gold standard for Americans,” Terry Wilcox, co-founder and executive director of Patients Rising, said. “Matheny Motors and those companies honored today are leading the way to provide top-notch coverage to their employees, and proving that it is possible to provide insurance that protects the pocketbook of both the employer and employees.”

Matheny Motors was honored with five other businesses and was recognized for its health plan that installed a relationship-based nurse navigator program to guide specialty medications and provider selection, among other areas.

“Our passionate nurse navigator and entire benefits team continue to fight the good fight for us and our employees,” Matt Martin, human resources director for Matheny Motors, said. “Our health plan has changed from majorly underperforming to a high powered recruiting tool for new employees,”

Care accessed through the plan reduced patient cost-sharing to zero in most cases and Matheny Motors saved $375,000 on health plan costs.

“Our employees throughout our organization were ready for a change and we were ready to give it to them,” Martin said. “We could have never imagined the life-changing impacts to our employees’ health by guiding them to see high-quality providers.”

The award program was launched in response to nationwide increases in health coverage premiums and deductibles. Family premiums have increased an average of 22% from 2015 to 2020 and deductibles for single-covered workers rose by 25% during that same time period.

“I hear from patients regularly that have outrageously high premiums and a deductible that’s impossible to meet,” Wilcox said. “To top it off, the coverage they get from these plans is minimal”

Recipients of the Health Plan Hero award demonstrate a health plan that expands patient access to care, lowers out-of-pocket costs, lowers employer spending, and is competitive due to increased workforce health, productivity, and savings.
