Axis Insurance acquires Calgary brokerage
Brokerage Axis Insurance Managers Inc. has announced the acquisition of Calgary-based P&C brokerage Baker Insurance Ltd., Axis’ second acquisition in a matter of days.
“This strategic move strengthens Axis’ presence in the region and enhances its ability to provide expert risk management solutions,” Axis Insurance said in a Sept. 26 press release.
The deal comes on the heels of Axis Insurance’s acquisition of O’Neill Group, a B.C. employee group benefits, life insurance and wealth advisory firm, announced Sept. 24.
Founded in 1976 and rebranded as Baker Insurance Ltd. following its acquisition by Ed Baker in 2006, the company has established a strong reputation for managing complex risks, specializing in both corporate and private asset insurance, Axis Insurance says in the release.
Baker Insurance provides expert risk management and consultancy services, including risk assessments, claims management, and comprehensive operational reviews. The brokerage also offers specialized insurance solutions such as surety bonds and inland marine coverage.
Ed and Colin Baker lead the commercial lines division, while Shelley and Tara Baker focus on personal lines, ensuring comprehensive coverage across client needs. “Their expertise in handling difficult-to-place risks further enhances Axis’ capabilities,” the release says.
With roots dating back to 1928 and more than 350 employees, Axis Insurance serves local, national and international clients with risk management and insurance services. It specializes in commercial, life, employee benefits and wealth advisory services.
“Axis’ journey to over $400 million in written premium has been driven by twelve strategic acquisitions and strong organic growth, fuelled by the success of 16 specialized practice groups,” the brokerage says.
New talent
In addition to its two recent acquisitions, Axis Insurance also made two talent announcements in September.
Rob McLeod, a seasoned insurance professional at Axis Insurance, has taken the helm as president of the Professional Liability Agents Network (PLAN) for a one-year term, effective Sept. 16. Established in 1984, PLAN is a network exclusively tailored to agents serving design professionals such as architects and engineers.
And Ben Preston joined the brokerage from Marsh Canada as senior vice president of energy, transportation and agribusiness, bringing more than 20 years’ experience.
