MetLife, Inc. (MetLife) has unveiled its 2023 Sustainability Report, which outlines the company’s efforts to promote sustainability and responsible business practices.

The report focuses on MetLife’s alignment with select United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and highlights its commitments to its stakeholders.

MetLife’s sustainability practices

MetLife said its approach to sustainability is built on a foundation of responsible management and long-term value creation.

“Our purpose inspires our people and drives long-term value for all our stakeholders,” said MetLife president and CEO Michel Khalaf. “We have been a responsible business and a source of stability for more than 156 years, and the actions we take today reflect our ability to consistently deliver for all our stakeholders for years to come.”


Diversity investments: MetLife has surpassed the goal of investing $1 billion in initiatives that promote diversity, with over $1.4 billion invested between 2021 and 2023;
Emission reductions: The company achieved emission reductions through increased energy efficiency, lower consumption at office locations, greening the vehicle fleet, and reducing business travel where possible;
Responsible investments: MetLife has secured more than $58.5 billion in responsible investments within its General Account as of the end of 2023. These investments are focused on infrastructure projects, green and municipal bonds, affordable housing, and other impact investments, aligning with the company’s sustainability goals;
Philanthropic contributions: The MetLife Foundation has surpassed $1 billion in total donations. These funds support initiatives that drive inclusive economic mobility and address the needs of underserved communities around the world; and
Employee volunteerism: In 2023, MetLife employees completed over 144,000 volunteer hours globally.

MetLife delves into Australians’ financial and climate fears

MetLife released its sustainability report after delving into the worries among Australians about financial inequality and climate change. The insurer’s study – which covered 12 countries, including Australia – found that Australians are more pessimistic about the future than the global average.

The study revealed that 82% of Australians (compared to only 72% globally) expect things to worsen before getting better, with 70% worried about financial inequality and 65% about the impacts of climate change in the near future.
