Running for Justice

Last Sunday it was hot. I was hot. I could feel the sweat drops going down my face… one after the other. The streets of Bristol were bustling with energy as runners from all walks of life gathered to participate in the Great Bristol Run, all with a common goal in mind: to have fun and support what each believed in – being a charity, helping a friend or maybe just keeping healthy. Despite the scorching sun beating down, the enthusiasm and determination of the participants shone through as they embarked on a challenging 10k run or half marathon.

The event not only provided a platform for fitness enthusiasts to showcase their running prowess but also served as a beacon of hope for the community, as each step taken by the participants translated into vital funds for charities. Mine was the Bristol Law Centre, a place where people coming from disadvantaged backgrounds can hope to get justice, ensuring that essential legal services remain accessible to all members of the community.

As the starting horn echoed through the air, the runners set off on their journey, weaving through the vibrant streets of Bristol with unwavering resolve. The warm weather posed a formidable challenge, everybody was looking for a bit of shade, but it was no match for the indomitable spirit of the participants, who pushed through the heat with sheer determination.

Amidst the sweat and the pounding of footsteps, there was an undeniable sense of camaraderie among the participants. Strangers became allies, encouraging each other to keep going and reach the finish line. People on the sides were making noise, clapping or shouting. I remember a sign saying: “GO random stranger, GO!”

For many, the event was not just about completing a race, it was about making a tangible difference in the lives of those in need.

As the last few meters were conquered and the finish line loomed ahead, crossing the finish line was not just a personal victory but a triumph for the Bristol Law Centre and the communities it serves. It was not just a race, it was a celebration of community, compassion, and the power of collective action.

As the sun set on the bustling streets of Bristol, one thing was clear: together, we can make a difference, one step at a time.
