Remember the foul endless rain we had a few years back? Well the weather folk decided it was all down to El Nino. The name might ring a bel as it’s the climate change that happens when Pacific waters warm up and the winds blow westerly across the US, the Atlantic and by definition over the UK

The one thing that characterises El Nino is its unpredictability but if you’re in its path is pretty awful

The way my dumb, simple and lay interpretation of the weather works is that when we look at the map of the UK and we see the wavy line on the TV; if where ever you may be is above it ( the wavy line ) we’re in for good weather. If however where you are is under or below the wavy line, then its heavy rain until it shifts

The experts, from Australia are saying their computer models are predicting – accepting a little bit of doubt has to be factored in, and it’s still early in the year – that a moderate to strong and possibly substantial El Nino event is likely, and it looks from their estimates that this will be a full blown El Nino

The UK Met Office have said the biggest fallout from the event will be damage to crops but it doesn’t pay to be complacent with the weather.

Sometimes I do wonder why we take in what the Met office say verbatim, when they only seem to get it right 50% of the time. But in a world where everyone looks to pass the buck and refuse responsibility I guess it’s better to be warned than surprised.

So just be sure during the summer months, please check on lose roof tiles and fencing that may need more support, cutting back some overhanging trees and ensuring the plumbing and drains are clear.

Simple checks when the weather is good won’t handicap the Bar-B-Q and may save you a lot of hassle later.

Here’s hoping the warning is a load of old tosh, but please always keep in mind regular checks on your home can save you a lot of money and hassle down the line and keep your insurance costs down

In the meantime let’s just hope we get a decent summer, and please don’t forget if you want good value home insurance you can rely on Trident to get it for you.
