2024 Maserati GranTurismo Folgore

2024 Maserati GranTurismo Folgore

Overview

The EV revolution continues as Italian automaker Maserati leaps into the electric vehicle marketplace, first with an EV variant of its new Grecale small SUV and next with this 2024 GranTurismo Folgore sports car. All of Maserati’s EVs will feature the Folgore name, which means “lightning” in Italian. The GranTurismo Folgore is promising some, er, lightning-quick acceleration to go along with its high-voltage moniker. According to Maserati, the car will be capable of hitting 60 mph in 2.7 seconds, and after sampling one on Italian roads we believe it. Achieving that number will require three electric motors, which combine to make 818 horsepower. The GranTurismo Folgore shares its design and interior with the new gasoline-powered GranTurismo and may spawn a convertible GranCabrio Folgore as well.

What’s New for 2024?

The GranTurismo Folgore will be an all-new model for the Maserati brand when it goes on sale. It will follow the gasoline-powered GranTurismo to market, but we expect to see it hit dealer lots before the end of 2023.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

Although the gasoline-powered GranTurismo is offered in Modena and Trofeo trims, the GranTurismo Folgore is offered in only one generously-equipped model. Expect sustainable interior materials, plentiful infotainment and driver-assistance tech, and blistering performance.

EV Motor, Power, and Performance

The GranTurismo Folgore is powered by a trio of electric motors that route up to 818 horsepower to all four wheels. As a result, the electric GranTurismo will likely be quicker than its gasoline-powered counterparts, the most powerful of which makes just 542 horsepower. Two of the motors drive the individual rear wheels while the third powers the front axle. Maserati says this allows for a torque-vectoring feature that impersonates a limited-slip differential. We were impressed by the GranTurismo Folgore during our initial test drive on some twisty roads north of Rome. Acceleration is, simply put, blistering, especially in the most aggressive Corsa drive mode. The test car we sampled unfortunately was wearing winter tires, so we couldn’t press it as hard in corners as we would have wanted, but from what we can tell so far the GranTurismo should offer a fairly fun time behind the wheel.

Range, Charging, and Battery Life

An 83.0-kWh battery pack should provide around 240 miles of driving range, but we’ll have to wait and see for ourselves when we get a chance to do our real-world range testing. Maserati says the GranTurismo Folgore can be fast charged at up to a 270 kW connection, enough to add 100 km of range in only 5 minutes by their yardstick.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPGe

The EPA hasn’t released fuel economy or driving range estimates for the GranTurismo Folgore yet, but we’ll update this story with details once they are available. We’ll also take the electric sports car on our 75-mph highway fuel economy route to determine its real-world results. For more information about the GranTurismo Folgore’s fuel economy, visit the EPA’s website.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

Like the regular GranTurismo, the GranTurismo Folgore is a four-seat coupe with a posh cabin. Although you’d never guess by looking at it, the car features sustainable materials throughout the interior design, including upholstery made from recycled fishing nets recovered from the ocean. Passenger and cargo space should be similar to that of the regular GranTurismo as well as rivals such as the Aston Martin Vantage and Mercedes-AMG GT. If Maserati moves forward with a GranCabrio version, expect that car’s trunk to see a decrease in capacity as it makes room for stowing a folding fabric roof.

Infotainment and Connectivity

All GranTurismo models come with a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen running Maserati’s latest Google-based infotainment system. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are both included and there’s a secondary 8.8-inch touchscreen that serves as the climate control panel. A head-up display is also available as is a 19-speaker premium stereo system tuned by Italian audio specialist Sonus Faber.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The GranTurismo Folgore offers several driver-assistance features as standard, but we still expect more advanced tech to be optional. For more information about the GranTurismo’s crash test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites. Key safety features include:

Standard automated emergency braking Standard lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist Available adaptive cruise control

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Maserati’s standard warranty is nothing special, with coverages that stretch for four years or 50,000 miles. Rival sports cars such as the Porsche 911 offer complimentary scheduled maintenance plans to enhance their value in this category.
